Forklift written-test questions are usually short scenarios covering load capacity, stability, pre-operation inspection and safe operating procedure, rather than pure definitions. What follows is a set of sample questions on each of those topics, each with the reasoning worked through rather than just the answer, because the reasoning is what transfers to the question you actually get.

Start with load capacity and the data plate. Suppose a forklift's data plate lists a rated capacity of 4,000 pounds at a 24-inch load centre, and the load's centre of gravity sits farther from the mast than those 24 inches. The safe carrying capacity decreases. Rated capacity is only accurate at the load centre printed on the plate, and as the load's centre of gravity moves farther from the front wheels — which is what happens with a longer or oddly balanced load — the effective safe capacity drops below the rated figure even though the load itself has not got any heavier. Those example numbers are illustrative rather than a universal specification; the principle is what matters.

A related question is whether a load weighing less than the truck's maximum rated capacity is always safe to carry regardless of its shape or centre of gravity. It is not. Weight alone does not determine safety: a lighter load with its centre of gravity far from the mast, or one that is unevenly distributed, can be less stable than a heavier, well-centred load comfortably within capacity.

On stability, the three points forming the stability triangle are the two front wheels and the pivot point of the steer axle at the rear. So long as the combined centre of gravity of truck and load stays inside that triangle, the truck remains stable. Raising a load, turning sharply or travelling on an incline all shift the effective centre of gravity toward the edge of it.

That explains a question operators often get wrong. Travelling down a ramp with a loaded forklift, should the load face uphill or downhill? Uphill. The operator typically reverses down the ramp, keeping the load on the higher side, which stops the load tipping forward and preserves visibility, since a raised load facing downhill can block the operator's view as well.

It also explains why raising a load higher off the ground reduces stability even when the weight has not changed. Lifting the load raises the combined centre of gravity of truck and load, which shrinks the margin before that centre of gravity travels outside the stability triangle during a turn or over uneven ground. This is why operators are trained to travel with the forks low and raise a load only to the height needed for placement. A load that sits perfectly stable at ground level can become unstable the moment it is lifted a few feet and the truck turns, with nothing else about the load having changed at all.

Pre-operation inspection questions usually ask you to name items you would check. Acceptable answers include fluid levels — oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, or battery charge depending on the power type — along with tyre condition, fork condition for cracks, bends or wear, chains and hydraulic hoses, horn function, lights, brakes, the seat belt, and the data plate itself, to confirm it is present and legible. A compliant checklist covers all of these rather than one or two, and skipping the check altogether is among the more common shortcuts an evaluator watches for. If an inspection turns up a hydraulic leak, the answer is to take the truck out of service and report it rather than continue operating: a hydraulic leak affects lift and tilt function and is a safety hazard, not a cosmetic issue to note and work around.

On safe operating procedure, the horn should be sounded at intersections, blind corners, doorways and anywhere visibility is limited or pedestrians might be present — essentially anywhere the operator cannot clearly see what is ahead or around a corner. This is a habit evaluators watch for during the hands-on portion, not merely a written-test item. Carrying a passenger on a forklift without a designated passenger seat is not acceptable; riders are permitted only where the truck has a seat or platform designed for the purpose, and riding on the forks, the frame or standing on the truck is not permitted. And before stepping away from a truck, even briefly, an operator should lower the forks fully to the ground, neutralise the controls, set the parking brake and shut off the engine or power if the truck will be unattended for any meaningful length of time. Leaving a raised load or an unbraked truck unattended is a common written-test scenario precisely because it is a common real-world lapse.

A few things worth knowing about practice questions generally. These are not the exact questions on any real test — actual questions vary by training provider and employer, since there is no single standardised national exam — but they reflect concepts appearing across most compliant programmes. Stability and load-centre questions tend to trip people up most, because they require applying a concept to an unfamiliar scenario rather than recalling a fact. You generally do not need to memorise exact weight figures; most tests focus on how capacity changes with load centre and height rather than specific numbers, which vary by truck model. And there is no fixed number of practice questions you should work through: covering every major topic area until you are consistently right and understand why beats hitting a target count.

The reason questions like these work better than rereading slides is that certification tests are written as short scenarios rather than definitions, so recognition-based review does not prepare you the way active recall does.
