Forklift Classes Explained: OSHA Classes I to VII

The seven classes in plain terms, what each is used for, and why being certified on one does not qualify you for another.

OSHA groups powered industrial trucks into seven classes, and certification on one does not automatically qualify you to operate another. Job postings that say "forklift experience required" rarely say which kind, and that gap matters more than it looks. Someone experienced on a warehouse counterbalance forklift is not automatically cleared to run a narrow-aisle reach truck or a rough-terrain forklift on a construction site: different controls, different stability characteristics, different hazards.

Class I is electric motor rider trucks. These are sit-down or stand-up forklifts powered by electric motors, common in warehouses and indoor distribution centres, and they are what most people picture when they hear the word forklift — counterbalanced, ride-on, used for general material handling. They are popular indoors because they are quieter and produce no exhaust.

Class II is electric motor narrow-aisle trucks, built specifically for tight warehouse aisles where a standard counterbalance truck cannot manoeuvre. Reach trucks and order pickers fall here. These often use specialised mast designs that lift loads high while keeping the truck's footprint narrow, and training on a Class I truck does not prepare an operator for the different reach mechanisms and visibility challenges involved.

Class III is electric motor hand trucks and hand/rider trucks — pallet jacks and similar equipment where the operator walks alongside or rides a small platform rather than sitting in a full operator compartment. They are common in retail stockrooms and smaller warehouses. Even though these feel far less intimidating than a full forklift, OSHA requires the same training and certification process for anyone operating them. Employers who assume a pallet jack is too simple to need formal training account for one of the more common compliance gaps inspectors flag, because the standard does not carve out an exception based on how easy the equipment feels to use.

Class IV is internal combustion engine trucks on solid cushion tyres. Gas, propane or diesel powered, designed for smooth indoor surfaces such as polished concrete warehouse floors. Cushion tyres give a lower profile, which helps where overhead clearance is tight. Employers often pick Class IV over Class I when a facility needs the extra power of an internal combustion engine but still runs primarily on smooth indoor floors.

Class V is internal combustion engine trucks on pneumatic tyres — similar power sources to Class IV, but with air-filled or solid pneumatic tyres built for rougher surfaces such as outdoor yards, gravel and uneven pavement. These turn up at lumber yards, construction supply operations and outdoor loading docks.

Class VI is electric and internal combustion engine tractors: tow tractors that pull loaded carts or trailers rather than lifting loads directly. Airport baggage tugs are the familiar example, along with tugger systems moving trailers between dock doors in a large distribution facility. The controls and the hazard profile differ meaningfully from lift trucks, because the operator is managing a towed load rather than a raised one.

Class VII is rough terrain forklift trucks — larger, heavy-duty machines built for construction sites and outdoor industrial yards with uneven, unpaved ground. They typically have larger tyres, higher ground clearance and different stability characteristics than warehouse equipment. An operator moving from a warehouse role to a construction site should expect to be evaluated separately on Class VII equipment even with years of Class I experience, because the terrain behaviour simply does not carry over.

Attachments complicate this further, and they are the part people miss. The seven classes describe the base truck, but bolting equipment onto it can push an operator outside what their certification actually covers without any change of class at all. A carton clamp, paper roll clamp, rotator or side-shifter mounted on a Class I or Class IV truck changes the load centre and the truck's effective capacity, and the data plate rating that applied to standard forks no longer applies once the attachment is fitted. Employers generally need to provide additional training specific to the attachment even though the truck is still, say, a Class I electric rider truck.

This surprises people who assume that being certified on Class I covers every job a Class I truck might be asked to do, and it catches workers moving between facilities with different attachment setups particularly hard. A worker trained and evaluated on a standard fork configuration is not automatically qualified to run that same physical truck once a clamp changes how it handles a load. The same logic extends to unusual load situations within a single class: a load extending well past the forks, a double-stacked pallet, or a load tall enough to block forward visibility can each justify additional training with no new attachment and no new class involved.

The reason the class distinction carries this much weight is the training standard itself. OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires training to be specific to the truck types an operator will use, so an employer cannot certify someone on a Class VII rough-terrain forklift on the strength of training and evaluation completed on a Class I warehouse forklift. The controls, the stability behaviour and the typical hazards are different enough that the standard treats them as separate certifications.

This is also why a job posting that says only "forklift certified" can mislead in both directions. An applicant may hold certification on a class the employer does not operate, and an employer may assume the word covers equipment it does not. If you are job hunting, ask directly which classes a role requires rather than assuming prior certification transfers.

For anyone studying, confusing the classes is a reliably common mistake on the written portion of a certification test, because several of them sound alike — Class IV and Class V differ mainly by tyre type, which is exactly the sort of distinction that blurs under exam pressure. Two other questions worth having straight: pallet jacks and comparable walk-behind or rider equipment fall under Class III, and Class I alongside Class V tend to be the most common in working facilities depending on whether the site is an indoor warehouse or an outdoor yard.
