Formulas tested both directions, process mapping, and the look-alike term pairs that trip people up.
Most people building CAPM flashcards build the wrong ones. The exam is scenario-based: it does not ask you to define a risk register, it gives you a situation and asks what a project manager should do with one. A card built for pure recall trains the wrong skill, which is why candidates who can recite definitions still struggle on test day.
Formulas belong on cards, but tested in both directions. Earned value management is the clearest case. One card should give you the inputs and ask you to compute a result. A second card should give you the result and ask what it means, so that when schedule performance index comes back at 0.85 you immediately know what that says about the schedule. Testing a formula one direction only leaves half the exam-relevant skill untrained.
Process-to-process-group mapping is the second category worth carding. Not what planning is, but which process group produces the cost baseline, or which process first creates the risk register. PMI tests process groups by asking what output belongs where, so cards built that way map directly onto how questions are actually posed.
Role distinctions are a recurring trap, especially in agile, because the roles sound similar and genuinely overlap in casual usage. Product owner, scrum master and project sponsor blur together until you have to say who accepts a completed sprint deliverable. Build the card around a specific action rather than asking what a role does in the abstract.
Then there are the pairs that sound like synonyms and are not: risk register and risk report, scope statement and scope baseline, change request and change log, verified scope and validated scope. This is where the CAPM plants its trickiest distractors, and a card that forces you to distinguish two look-alikes beats rereading a glossary every time.
Just as important is what to leave off. Straight glossary definitions with no application test memory rather than judgment. Narrative passages from the PMBOK Guide that are not independently testable waste review cycles on material PMI does not weight heavily. Overlapping duplicates should be consolidated, since five cards that all amount to define X are better as one card testing X against its two closest look-alikes. And any card claiming a specific passing percentage is teaching you something false, because PMI does not publish one.
Spaced repetition is what makes a good deck work. Cards you answer correctly move to longer intervals; cards you miss come back sooner, so your review queue self-corrects toward your weak spots without you tracking them manually. That matters more for the CAPM than for a pure memorization exam, because the content spans four domains and almost nobody starts equally strong in all four. If you keep missing agile role questions, those cards resurface more often on their own.
The failure mode is reviewing a deck front to back in the same order every session. That trains you to recognize the sequence rather than retrieve the answer cold, and it is a common and mostly invisible way study time gets wasted.
Building your own cards forces you to process the material once while writing them, which has real value, but it is slow and it is easy to accidentally build the definition-style cards that test the wrong thing.
