CoStudy's SAT Math bank holds 330 items. Every multiple-choice question carries a written rationale explaining why the correct answer is correct and why each distractor is tempting but wrong.
A sample of 7 multiple-choice questions from the bank, with the full rationale shown.
The probability of rolling a sum of 7 on two fair six-sided dice is:
Answer: C — 1/6
C) Six favorable pairs out of 36 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1) → 6/36 = 1/6. A/B/D) Other probabilities for different sums.
Solve for x: 5^(x+1) = 125.
Answer: D — 2
125 = 5³, so x + 1 = 3 → x = 2. When bases match, set exponents equal.
A rectangle has perimeter 28 and area 48. What are its dimensions?
Answer: B — 6 × 8
L + W = 14, LW = 48. Solving: 6 × 8 = 48 and 6 + 8 = 14. ✓
If 3x − 5 = 16, what is the value of x?
Answer: C — 7
Add 5 to both sides: 3x = 21. Divide by 3: x = 7. (A) divides 21 by 7 instead of by 3. (B) subtracts 16−5−3 in the wrong order. (D) forgets to divide by 3.
Solve: |2x − 5| = 7.
Answer: A — x = 6 or x = −1
Absolute value gives two cases: 2x − 5 = 7 → x = 6; or 2x − 5 = −7 → x = −1.
A population of 200 grows 3% per year. What is the predicted population after 2 years (rounded)?
Answer: B — 212
Use the compound formula P = 200(1.03)² = 200 × 1.0609 = 212.18, rounded to 212. (A) applies 3% once not twice; (D) does linear growth (200 + 60).
If 2^x = 8, what is x?
Answer: D — 3
8 = 2³, so x = 3. The exponential form 2^x lets us match exponents on the same base.

Solve: -3x + 5 ≤ 11. Watch sign flip!
-3x ≤ 6 → x ≥ -2 (flip inequality).
Absolute value: solve |x − 5| = 7.
x − 5 = 7 or x − 5 = -7 → x = 12 or x = -2.
Horizontal asymptote of (3x² + 1)/(x² + 5)?
y = 3 (ratio of leading coefficients, equal degrees).
Factor: x² + 2x − 8.
(x+4)(x−2).
Product of roots of ax² + bx + c = 0?
c/a.
Compound interest: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt). What if continuously compounded?
A = Pe^(rt).

Yes. Every multiple-choice item carries a written rationale that states the controlling principle behind the correct answer and then addresses each wrong option in turn — why it tempts and precisely where it fails. Knowing why the plausible answer was wrong is worth more than knowing which letter was right.

Last reviewed 2026-08-22. Banks are written against the certifying body's published exam outline and re-checked when that outline changes — exams get renumbered, retired and reweighted, and a bank written to a superseded outline teaches the wrong proportions. Figures that are re-indexed annually are deliberately not asserted as rules; the questions test the governing principle instead.
This bank is written against the College Board's published exam material. Check the SAT test specifications for the current outline, fees and eligibility rules — those change, and the certifying body is the only authority on them. CoStudy is not affiliated with the College Board.
